HVLP stands for high volume low pressure – this means that HVLP spray guns work with a lot of air and little pressure.
In this process, the paint is atomised at the air cap of the spray gun with a maximum of 0.7 bar internal nozzle pressure. This means that HVLP spray guns produce less overspray and the spray pattern is significantly improved. Excessive overspray from spray guns can significantly impair the spray pattern.
The advantages of the HVLP process over conventional spray methods are that they are more environmentally friendly and cost-effective because less paint ends up in the environment and in the air. The material application efficiency with HVLP spray guns is significantly higher as a result. The required air volume for HVLP spray guns is 600–2000 NI/min.
The disadvantage of HVLP technology is that the spray gun must be held close to the workpiece to be coated and the area performance is relatively low. This has led to the development of the HVLP Plus process, which is an improvement on the existing HVLP technology.
The advantage of this further development of HVLP technology is an even higher transfer efficiency. This means material savings and reduced air consumption. The HVLP Plus technology also results in an even better surface quality. The internal nozzle pressure at the air cap of the spray gun is approx. 1.3 bar.

In addition to the two methods mentioned, HVLP and HVLP Plus, there is also the conventional method, in which the material is atomised at the air cap of the spray gun at a pressure of 2.5 bar to 4 bar. The air inlet pressure used at the spray gun is between 2.5 and 5 bar for the conventional spraying method. Due to the very high pressure, a very fine atomisation is achieved, but with a lot of paint mist and high material consumption.
