Cutting & flap discs – clearly distinguish cutting from surface processing

Cutting discs and flap discs are intended for different processing tasks. Cutting discs make a cut; flap discs remove material from a surface with their abrasive flaps. Always select the disc according to material, machine and task. Diameter, mounting and permissible rotational speed are key safety and selection features.

The disc type must match the task

Do not use a cutting disc for side grinding or surface sanding. Side loads can damage the disc. A flap disc is likewise no substitute for a cutting disc. Check the markings and all restrictions on use. Different designs within the same product group may have additional requirements.

Check material suitability and operating limits

Steel, stainless steel, aluminium and other materials have different requirements. Material approval must be stated on the disc or in its documentation. For flap discs, grain type, grit size and backing also influence removal characteristics. A trial operation can help assess the finish, but never replaces missing approval for the material or machine.

Check diameter, mounting and rotational speed

Disc and machine must be compatible mechanically and in terms of permissible operating speed. The printed limit must not be exceeded. Use the prescribed guard and suitable clamping equipment. For resin-bonded products, observe any use-by dates and storage instructions; damaged discs must be discarded.

Prepare the workplace for sparks and particles

Secure the workpiece and arrange the work area according to the machine instructions and workplace protection requirements. Sparks and hot particles must not strike combustible materials uncontrollably. An ordinary sanding dust extractor is not automatically suitable for sparks or combustible metal dust. The required extraction and protective equipment must be specified separately.

Frequently asked questions: cutting & flap discs

May I smooth a weld seam with a cutting disc?

Not by side grinding. Use a tool approved for this surface work, such as a suitable flap disc, and observe the machine approval.

Can I fit a larger disc at a lower rotational speed?

Not without explicit approval. Permissible diameter, guard and mounting are just as important as rotational speed. Reducing speed alone does not make an unsuitable disc acceptable.

Is every disc suitable for stainless steel?

No. Use only products specified for it and follow workplace requirements for keeping materials separate.
