Sanding strips & sheets – defined formats for machine and hand sanding

Sanding strips and sheets provide a practical basis for working flat areas, filled surfaces and details. Strips fit suitable sanding shoes or hand blocks; sheets offer versatile formats for approved hand and machine applications. Exact dimensions, attachment and abrasive material suited to the substrate are decisive.

Match the format to the sanding shoe or hand block

Compare length and width with the intended tool attachment. An even fit is particularly important on long hand blocks or sanding shoes. Hook-and-loop products and versions for clamp holders cannot be interchanged merely because their dimensions are similar. When cutting to size, allow for the extra material required by the holder.

Coordinate perforation and working surface

On machines with extraction, the hole pattern is a key selection criterion. Openings in the strip, protective interface and sanding shoe must provide a suitable connection to the extraction channel. Mesh material can be an alternative, but also needs a compatible arrangement. Do not use a closed intermediate layer if it blocks the intended extraction.

Distinguish flat sanding from detail work

A suitable firm hand block helps guide the tool for flat sanding. A conformable support is more appropriate on profiles or curves. A long sanding surface only helps if it suits the component and can be guided in a controlled way. Check edges and transitions regularly before further sanding removes too much material.

Keep dry and wet applications separate

Wet sanding sheets and dry sanding products differ in approval and construction. Use water or other process media only as directed in the product and tool instructions. Keep the working surface clean and inspect the scratch pattern before moving to a finer stage. Old particles should not be carried into the next operation.

Frequently asked questions: sanding strips & sheets

What is the difference between strips and sheets?

The terms mainly describe the format. Strips are often narrow and designed for particular hand blocks or sanding shoes; sheets are wider. Dimensions and attachment determine actual use.

May I cut a sanding sheet to size myself?

Suitable products can be cut to size. Consider attachment, the lengths required for clamping and, where relevant, the extraction hole pattern.

Why does the scratch pattern remain uneven?

Possible causes include an unsuitable block, uneven tool guidance, clogged material or foreign particles. Check the entire arrangement rather than simply using a finer grit.
