Interface pads – flexible intermediate layers for contours and coordinated fine sanding

Interface pads are used between backing pad or sanding shoe and abrasive in combinations intended for them. They change contact-surface conformity and can support work on curves or sensitive contours. Thickness, hardness, format and hole pattern are important selection features. An interface is not a universal upgrade for every sanding task, but a process component to select deliberately.

Contour conformity rather than simply more softness

A yielding layer can follow surface shape more easily. For deliberate surface levelling, however, this very property can be undesirable. First decide whether to preserve the existing contour or correct a shape. Test the effect on the component and pay particular attention to edges and transitions.

Thickness and hardness as part of the arrangement

Different thicknesses and material properties affect distance from the pad and contact behaviour. A thicker interface does not automatically produce a better finish. Choose the manufacturer's recommended version and avoid unauthorised stacking of multiple layers. The entire arrangement must suit the intended machine guidance.

Coordinate attachment and extraction perforation

Interface, pad and abrasive must match in format and attachment. In extracted systems, preserve airflow through all layers. Check hole pattern or suitability for mesh abrasives. Centre the interface carefully and replace products with damaged attachment surfaces or permanently deformed cushioning.

Distinguish from a simple pad saver

A pad saver mainly protects the hook-and-loop surface, while an interface deliberately changes support behaviour. Manufacturers may use different terms for combined functions. Product construction and application information, rather than naming alone, are therefore decisive. A thin protective layer is not a universal substitute for the contour support needed.

Frequently asked questions: interface pads

When is an interface particularly useful?

When the approved process requires more conformable support, for example on curves. Suitability depends on workpiece, abrasive and required surface appearance.

Can an interface improve flat sanding?

Not automatically. Extra compliance may make the support follow unevenness more readily. Choose suitable firm support separately for flat sanding.

May I stack several interfaces?

Only in an expressly intended combination. Unauthorised stacking changes attachment and guidance and is not a general method for adjusting softness.
