Polishes & compounds – controlled removal from correction to finishing

Polishes and compounds are selected according to surface condition and the required processing result. Coarser correction and fine finishing require different products or combinations. Terms such as Cut, Finish and One-Step offer useful guidance but do not replace material approval. Check paint, gelcoat or another substrate along with machine, pad and recommended preparation.

Start with sanding marks and polishing objective

Establish which scratch pattern or defects need treatment. A polish can act only within its intended application and the available surface layer. A stated preceding sanding stage must be understood in relation to product and process. Do not automatically choose the strongest compound if a less abrasive arrangement already achieves the objective.

Check substrate compatibility separately

A recommendation for gelcoat cannot automatically be transferred to every automotive clearcoat or plastic. Fresh and fully cured coatings also differ in permissible processing conditions. Follow technical product information and coating manufacturer requirements. With an unknown coating system, a suitable preliminary test is particularly important.

Follow pad combination and processing instructions

A compound's effect results from its interaction with pad, motion and guidance. Follow recommended dosage and operating range; more product does not automatically improve results. Use separate working materials for different polishing stages. Loaded or contaminated pads must be cleaned or replaced as instructed.

Inspect results and store the product correctly

Remove residues by a surface-approved method and inspect the finish under suitable lighting. Observe preparation, storage and shelf-life instructions. For sensitive subsequent processes, also check product features such as declared silicone-free formulation; these must not be inferred from general workshop suitability.

Frequently asked questions: polishes & compounds

What does One-Step mean for a polish?

It describes an intended approach in which one product may cover several requirements depending on substrate and objective. It does not guarantee that every surface needs no preparation or additional finishing.

Can a coarse compound always remove deep scratches?

No. Workability depends on defect depth and available layer thickness. Excessive removal can damage the substrate; not every defect can be corrected by polishing.

Does polish colour indicate a fixed cut grade?

No. Colour and stage markings are manufacturer- or system-specific. Compare the stated application rather than product colour alone.
