Foam, wool & felt pads – the right contact medium for polishing

Foam, wool and felt pads differ in material, construction and intended use. They form the contact surface between polishing machine, polish and workpiece. The right choice depends on more than a soft or firm feel: substrate, motion type, backing plate size and polish approval must match together. A suitable pad supports the defined processing stage, not automatically every polishing application.

Choose material by application, not a general ranking

Foam pads come in different structures and versions; wool pads are used in specifically matched polishing systems. Felt may be intended for specialist applications such as certain glass polishing processes. This does not imply general approval for all paints. Compare the specific description and recommended polish combination instead of universally classifying materials as coarse or fine.

Match diameter, attachment and backing plate

Pad and backing plate must match each other and the machine in dimensions and attachment. Observe the intended overhang and approval for the working motion. Centre the pad carefully and inspect the attachment surface. Extra pressure cannot reliably compensate for a damaged or unsuitable hook-and-loop connection.

Interpret structure and colours correctly

Smooth, waffle-patterned or other structured surfaces are part of the specific product design. Colours likewise provide guidance only within their own system. One brand's yellow pad need not share the working focus of another brand's same-colour product. Base selection on cut, finish and compatibility information.

Separate, inspect and maintain pads

Keep coarser and finer polishing stages separate so abrasive residues are not carried into finishing. Clean pads only by approved methods and allow them to dry as required before storage. Inspect foam, fibres, edges and attachment for damage. Do not continue using a heavily worn pad solely because its backing still adheres.

Frequently asked questions: foam, wool & felt pads

Are wool pads always more aggressive than foam pads?

Such a general classification is unreliable. The effect depends on the specific pad, polish, drive and substrate. The recommended combination is decisive.

Can I use a felt pad on automotive clearcoat?

Only with explicit approval for that process. Felt pads may be designed for specialist applications and are not a general substitute for a paint-polishing pad.

Can I use the same pad for cutting and finishing?

Separate allocation is advisable to avoid mixing different abrasive residues. Also follow the cleaning requirements of the particular system.
