Mesh abrasives – an open structure for effective dust capture

Mesh abrasives have an open backing through which sanding dust can be extracted when combined with a suitable system. Depending on the product range, they are available as discs, strips and other formats. The mesh structure is only one component: a matching pad, protective interface, hose and extractor together create a coordinated sanding process for the material concerned.

Open backing instead of individual extraction holes

While conventional sandpaper often channels dust through defined holes, the mesh structure is open across its surface. This calls for a different coordination between abrasive and supporting pad. Select the right format and check the attachment. Even a mesh product needs an unobstructed air path to the extractor.

Choose grit and product range according to the substrate

Mesh abrasives are not universally approved for all materials. Product ranges differ in grain type, backing and intended applications, among other things. Filler, wood, paint or harder substrates may each benefit from a different version. Follow the material specifications and the surface requirements of the next operation.

Select the protective interface and extraction together

A suitable protective interface preserves the pad's hook-and-loop surface without unnecessarily restricting airflow. Observe the manufacturer's recommended combination and replace worn interfaces. If extraction deteriorates, also check the hose, connections and filter system. A new mesh abrasive does not clear a blockage elsewhere.

Reduce dust while still assessing protection needs

The objective is lower dust exposure within a coordinated process, rather than a promise of a completely dust-free environment in every situation. Choose the extractor according to the material generated and workplace requirements. Further protective measures remain dependent on the risk assessment. Clean the workpiece and workplace using suitable methods.

Frequently asked questions: mesh abrasives

Does abrasive mesh work without an extractor?

Mechanical processing alone does not replace dust capture. To use the open structure's extraction advantage, a suitably connected extraction system is required.

Do mesh discs require a special pad?

The pad must suit the chosen combination and provide sufficiently open air paths. The manufacturer's specifications determine whether an existing pad may be used and which protective interface is required.

Can mesh abrasives replace respiratory protection?

This cannot be guaranteed universally. The material, working conditions and risk assessment determine the protective measures required, even with effective extraction.
