Sanders – the right working motion for surfaces, contours and details

Sanding machines differ primarily in their working motion, contact-surface shape and drive. A random orbital sander handles different tasks from a belt file sander; a long-reach sander is designed for walls and ceilings. Do not decide on power or weight alone. Workpiece geometry, removal objective, abrasive and dust capture together determine which machine suits your workflow.

Select machine type according to the workpiece

Round backing pads suit many surface tasks, while rectangular or triangular sanding shoes reach other geometries. Belts concentrate contact along a defined track, while angle tools with approved accessories perform specific removal or cutting tasks. Check access to internal corners, profiles and recesses on the actual component before assuming universal usability.

Electric, pneumatic or battery-powered?

Electric machines need a suitable power supply; pneumatic models require an appropriately designed compressed-air supply. Cordless tools facilitate certain mobile tasks, but require a compatible battery and charging system. Compare the overall workplace requirements, including energy supply, hose or cable routing, operating time and connection to existing extraction.

Coordinate stroke, speed and contact surface

Stroke or working motion influences the nature of processing. Speed control extends adjustment options, but does not replace a coordinated combination of machine, abrasive and supporting pad. Observe the maximum permissible rotational speed of every fitted accessory. A suitable test area is more informative for practical selection than a single power figure.

Plan for ergonomics, extraction and maintenance

For recurring tasks, grip position, weight, vibration and freedom of movement with a connected hose matter. Keep air paths and attachment surfaces clean according to the instructions, and inspect wear parts. Repairs to electrical or safety-relevant assemblies require qualified personnel. Disconnect the energy supply according to the operating instructions before changing accessories.

Frequently asked questions: sanders

Which sander is suitable for every task?

There is no such universal machine. Surfaces, corners, weld seams and wall areas present different requirements. Choose the type according to your main applications and add specialist tools where needed.

Is higher power automatically better?

No. Power alone describes neither surface quality nor handling. Working motion, control, abrasive and interaction with extraction are also decisive.

Can I continue using existing accessories?

Only with confirmed compatibility. Mounting, dimensions, speed approval and, where relevant, extraction connection must match the new machine model.
