Sanding discs – controlled surface sanding for paint, wood and other materials

Sanding discs are round abrasives for compatible machines and hand sanding pads. Whether preparing a substrate, sanding between coats or refining scratches before polishing, diameter, grain and backing must suit the task. This category focuses on choosing sanding discs; bonded cutting discs and flap discs serve different purposes and are considered separately.

Match diameter and attachment correctly

Select the disc according to your tool's approved pad size and attachment. An approximately matching diameter is not sufficient. For hook-and-loop and self-adhesive versions, use the intended attachment and centre the disc. Damaged edges, creases or poorly adhering areas must be rectified before use, or the abrasive replaced.

Hole pattern and mesh structure for dust flow

On perforated discs, the openings must match the pad's extraction system. Mesh discs allow dust capture across the surface, but also require a suitable pad and the recommended protective interface. Check the complete combination: if intermediate layers block airflow, the abrasive alone cannot ensure dust removal.

Select grit according to the processing objective

Material removal calls for a different choice from fine sanding between paint coats. Start with the actual surface condition and plan subsequent stages according to the coating system. A test area helps assess removal and scratch pattern. Deep sanding scratches should not merely be worked over superficially with a very fine disc.

Consider pad hardness and working technique

The supporting pad also influences the result. A contour-adapting interface pad may help on curved surfaces, but does not replace selecting the right backing pad. Operate the machine according to its instructions and pay particular attention to sensitive edges. Wet sanding is permitted only when the abrasive, tool and working method are all intended for it.

Frequently asked questions: sanding discs

Does every sanding disc fit every random orbital sander?

No. Diameter, attachment, hole pattern and approval for the tool must match. Any additional protective or soft interface pad must also suit the combination.

Which matters more: grit or perforation?

They serve different purposes. Grit influences material removal and scratch pattern; perforation supports extraction. A suitable grit cannot compensate for an unsuitable extraction system.

Can I use the same disc for wet and dry sanding?

Only if the product is approved accordingly. Waterproof abrasive material does not automatically mean the machine used is also suitable for wet sanding.
