Sanding belts & file belts – precise fitting for surfaces, edges and detail work

Sanding belts and file belts combine continuous material removal with a clearly defined working width. Wider versions are used for surface processing, for example, while narrow file belts reach difficult areas and enable targeted metal finishing. Selection depends not only on grit and material, but also on belt dimensions, backing, joint and the specific machine.

Match belt length and width precisely

Obtain length and width from your sander's documentation or from a clearly identified, compatible reference. Similar dimensions are not interchangeable: belt tracking and tensioning require the intended geometry. Observe any direction-of-travel marking and check belt tracking after installation according to the machine instructions.

Material and grain type determine the application

Wood, steel, aluminium and coated surfaces require different products. Cloth and paper backings, different grain types and coating densities are tailored to specific tasks. File belts for weld seams work over a different contact area from large-surface wood sanding. Use the specific belt's material approval rather than a universal grit recommendation.

Consider the belt joint and contact area

The joint is a functional part of the sanding belt. Its construction must suit the sanding process; damaged or separating joints are a reason for replacement. Also check the contact roller, sanding shoe and belt guide. A new belt cannot compensate for defects in a worn or incorrectly adjusted machine.

Control heat input and storage

Match belt speed, feed and contact pressure to the process. Discolouration, excessive heating or uneven marks call for checking the combination. Store belts according to the manufacturer's instructions and protect them from kinks, moisture and adverse climatic fluctuations. Stop using deformed or torn belts.

Frequently asked questions: sanding belts & file belts

How does a file belt differ from a wider sanding belt?

File belts are narrow endless belts for compatible belt file sanders. They suit targeted work over small contact areas; machine and material approval remain decisive.

Is belt width enough for reordering?

No. You also need the length and suitable version, grit and, where relevant, belt joint. Checking against the manufacturer's article number is the most reliable approach.

May a belt run against the arrow?

Any direction-of-travel marking must be observed. Whether a different belt may be used in either direction depends on its manufacturer's specifications.
