Non-woven abrasives, sanding pads and sanding sponges complement rigid abrasives where curves, recesses and profiled components need controlled processing. Depending on the version, they suit matting, refining and preparing surfaces. This category concerns materials with their own abrasive action; pure polishing pads without abrasive grit are selected according to a different principle of use.
Non-woven abrasives have an open fibre structure containing abrasive grains. A sanding sponge or foam-backed sanding pad instead combines a yielding support with an abrasive surface. Both concepts can adapt to contours, but are not automatically suitable for the same removal task. Compare product construction and the manufacturer's stated application.
Colours and terms such as fine or ultrafine are helpful within a product range. Their meaning is not consistent across different manufacturers and material families, however. Choose the version according to the intended application and a test area. A non-woven finish must not be equated with the scratch pattern of a particular paper grit without checking.
Match the abrasive's shape and size to the contour rather than forcing the material into narrow areas with high pressure. Check the remaining coating thickness particularly on protruding edges. The objective may be even matting; removing deep defects is a different task and may require another sanding method.
Some non-woven and foam products are designed for wet and dry applications; others have narrower operating limits. The individual product version remains decisive. Remove residue by a suitable method before the next stage and stop using damaged or heavily contaminated pads. Machine use also requires approval for the tool.

No. A pad with abrasive action contains abrasive grains or a corresponding coating. A polishing pad usually acts as a carrier for a suitable polish. The product description must clearly state the intended purpose.
Non-woven abrasives are often used for matting and surface refinement. They are not universally the right choice for deep defects. First assess the defect depth and permissible material removal.
No. Colour coding depends on the manufacturer and range. Compare the precise designation and approved application.
