Polishing & finish – match the final processing stage to the surface
Polishing and finishing follow suitable surface preparation. They refine sanding marks, correct local defects or deliberately improve gloss and appearance. The combination of substrate, polishing machine, polish and pad is decisive. Cleaning and inspection are part of the process so the actual result can be assessed. Polishing does not replace proper preparation or a sufficiently durable coating, however.
Assess initial condition and defects
First check the marks present and the surface structure. Deep defects, sensitive edges and thin coatings require a different approach from light sanding or polishing marks. Coordinate planned removal with the material requirements. A brief test in a suitable area helps establish the mildest effective process.
Combine machine, polish and pad
Rotary and orbital polishers differ in their motion. Pads also have different materials and structures, while polishes focus on different applications. Select a manufacturer-recommended combination and assess it on the particular substrate. Product colours or general stage designations are not automatically comparable across brands.
Inspect between operations
Remove residues using suitable clean cloths and a method approved for the surface. Inspect the result under suitable lighting before using a finer stage. Dirty pads or carried-over coarse particles can damage an already refined finish again. Keep working materials for different stages separate.
Finishing as a defined final step
Depending on its version, a finishing product may serve fine processing, cleaning, inspection or protection. These tasks are not equivalent. Particularly before subsequent coating, check compatibility with the further system. Choose the final step according to the required result, not solely a general designation such as high gloss or sealant.

Frequently asked questions: polishing & finish
Can polishing remove every sanding mark?
No. It depends on depth, substrate and available coating thickness. Overly coarse or deep marks may require adjusted preparation; further removal is not unlimited.
Do I always need several polishing stages?
Not necessarily. The required sequence follows from initial condition and objective. A suitable test shows whether one combination suffices or an extra finishing step is worthwhile.
Are polishing and surface protection the same?
No. An abrasive polish works the surface. A protective product has a different task; individual products may combine functions, which their description must explain.
