Protective & soft interfaces / pad savers – protect hook-and-loop surfaces and identify the right layers
Protective and soft interfaces and pad savers sit between tool mounting and abrasive in suitable systems. Distinguish their functions precisely: a pad saver mainly protects the hook-and-loop surface from wear, while a softer layer may also change contact behaviour. Choose by description, format and system approval. Different manufacturers' names do not automatically indicate identical functions.
Pad saver as a replaceable wear layer
A suitable pad saver sits between an intact pad or hand block and the abrasive. It can protect the underlying hook-and-loop surface from direct wear and be replaced when needed. Observe system recommendations particularly for mesh abrasives. A protective layer replaces neither a defective pad nor damaged tool mounting.
Do not confuse protection with cushioning
A very thin protective layer has a different task from a thicker, yielding interface. Products called soft interfaces may have different designs. Check whether hook-and-loop protection or changed contour conformity is primarily needed. The separate Interface pads section helps select layers that affect sanding behaviour.
Match format, hook-and-loop system and extraction
Diameter or length and width must suit tool and abrasive. Also check attachment sides and hole pattern. A protective layer must not inadvertently block intended dust flow. Fit it centrally, without creases, according to instructions. Several stacked protective layers are not a general substitute for a suitable interface.
Replace early rather than carry over adhesion problems
Inspect attachment surface and layer structure regularly. If the abrasive loosens, the interface, pad or disc itself may be worn. Check all contact points. Replace damaged products before loose edges or uneven fastening impair work. A new protective layer needs an intact base.

Is a pad saver the same as an interface?
Not necessarily. A pad saver mainly protects the attachment surface; an interface changes compliance. The actual function of the specific version is decisive.
Must a protective layer have the same hole pattern?
It must support the intended dust flow of the combination. Coordinate pad, interface and abrasive according to manufacturer recommendations.
When is a pad saver worn out?
When attachment or structure no longer works correctly, or visible damage is present. Follow replacement requirements and also inspect the underlying pad.
