Abrasive rolls – flexible cut lengths for recurring sanding tasks

Abrasive rolls provide abrasive material in continuous lengths. Suitable sections can therefore be prepared for hand blocks, profiles or other approved applications. Depending on the version, paper, cloth, mesh or cushioned backings are used. Check roll width, grit and attachment so that the cut section suits your tool and the required scratch pattern.

Roll width and required cut length

First determine the usable working area of the hand tool. Clamp attachments also require sufficient extra material for securing the abrasive. Perforated rolls provide predefined sections; unperforated versions allow individual lengths. Cut the material so that creases or uncontrolled overhanging edges do not interfere with the work.

Flexibility for surfaces and profiles

A more dimensionally stable backing supports different tasks from a conformable material for curves. Cushioned versions can make contour work easier, while a suitable firm support is appropriate for flat surfaces. Choose according to substrate, required material removal and the intended next process, rather than perceived softness alone.

Check attachment and extraction capability

An abrasive roll without hook-and-loop backing cannot be attached to a hook-and-loop hand block in the same way as a Grip product. On tools with extraction, cut sections must also support the intended dust flow. Mesh material and punched or perforated versions therefore require individual checking. Covered extraction channels impair the overall system's performance.

Organise consumption and avoid mix-ups

Keep rolls in the designated dispenser or protected in their original packaging. Label cut remnants with grit and product range if these are no longer identifiable. Separate clean stock from sections already used. This makes it clear which material is being used for each operation.

Manufacturers & system selection

  • Mirka – Compare the approved materials, backings and attachment methods of each abrasive range.
  • sia Abrasives – additional abrasive ranges in the brand section. Compare the backing, attachment and application for each product.
  • Finixa – a complementary product selection for surface preparation. Suitability for a particular application is determined by the relevant product data.

Frequently asked questions: abrasive rolls

Are abrasive rolls only suitable for hand sanding?

Not necessarily. Use depends on the product version and intended tool attachment. An arbitrary cut section is not automatically approved for a machine, however.

What is the advantage of perforated rolls?

Predefined tear-off points make uniform cut sections easier. Check whether the section length and attachment system actually fit your hand block.

Can roll material replace an endless sanding belt?

No. Endless belts have a purpose-designed joint and specified dimensions. Simply joining roll sections is no substitute for an approved sanding belt.
