The split spray jet: causes and remedies

A split spray pattern: causes and solutions

A split spray pattern is a common problem that can occur during painting. It not only affects the appearance, but also leads to uneven colour distribution. In this article, we explain how a split spray jet occurs and what you can do about it.

What is a split spray jet?

Definition:
A split fan occurs when the central area of the spray fan is interrupted. Instead of an even application of paint, the spray pattern shows a gap in the middle. This phenomenon can significantly affect the quality of the paint job.

Possible causes

  • Insufficient viscosity: The ratio of viscosity to air pressure is uneven.
  • Spray pressure too high: excess pressure at the horn holes splits the spray jet in the middle.
  • Dirty or blocked frontal holes: the air from the frontal holes is diverted to the horn holes, causing the spray jet to split in the centre.

How can you rectify the problem?

  1. Check the viscosity of the paint material and, if necessary, select a different nozzle size.
  2. Set the spray pressure correctly, for example, using SATA adam, SATA DIGITAL or a SATA air micrometer with a pressure gauge.
  3. Clean the air cap carefully using a suitable cleaning tool. If necessary, replace the nozzle set.

Frequently asked questions

Question: What is a split spray fan?
Answer: A split spray pattern occurs when the central area of the spray pattern is interrupted. This results in uneven paint distribution and impairs the painting result.

Question: How can a split spray pattern be avoided?
Answer: The causes should be checked: adjust the viscosity, ensure the pressure setting is correct and thoroughly clean the air cap. If necessary, the nozzle set can be replaced.
