Agglomeration in powder coatings – causes and solutions

Agglomeration is a common problem in powder coating that can lead to uneven coatings, poor adhesion and increased scrap rates. But what causes these lumps and how can they be prevented?

Common causes of agglomeration

• High humidity during powder storage
• Temperature fluctuations during transport or storage
• Excessive storage time or unsuitable packaging
• Mechanical compaction due to improper handling
• Residues in conveyor lines or containers

How to avoid agglomeration

Always store powder coating in a dry place at a constant temperature, ideally below 25 °C and at a humidity level below 50 %. Use the original sealed packaging and avoid heavy mechanical loads during transport and handling. Clean conveyor and spray systems regularly to avoid residue.
