The advantages of the SuperCorona
The low-ion charging with the retrofittable SuperCorona attachment is used wherever
thicker powder layers and high optical coating quality are required at the same time. Typical
applications for the SuperCorona are the coating of profiles, wheel rims, grilles, radiators and drawers. SuperCorona is also excellently suited for use with structural powders, as this reduces the "picture frame effect" and results in much more even patterns.
Why does an "orange peel" effect occur?
During the electrostatic charging, a large number of air ions are produced by the electrode tip at high voltage
ions are produced. The powder flowing past is negatively charged and, by means of the air flow and
the electrostatic field onto the grounded workpiece. Only a minimal number of air ions charge the powder particles; 90-95% miss the powder and drift as free air ions in the booth. The air ions
move towards the nearest grounded object (workpiece, gun mounting, metal cabin wall
metal) and settle there. With bare, uncoated metal, the excess ions can
the grounding. However, as soon as the workpiece is coated with a layer of powder, the ions
can no longer find a path to ground. This generates an electrostatic induction charge, which attracts or repels newly arriving powder in different
attracts or repels new powder, causing uneven powder distribution and orange peel.
