Graco GX21 & GX19 Airless Sprayers: The Complete Guide for Professionals

Maximize efficiency and finish quality with the electric airless sprayer. This practical guide summarizes all important settings, safety notes, and workflows from the manual for you.

Graco GX21 electric airless sprayer

Product Overview: GX21 vs. GX19 / GX FF

The cordless Graco airless sprayers are designed for solvent-based and water-based materials. Here are the essential differences:

Model Type Max. Tip Size Flow Rate Application
GX21 Stand unit with suction hose 0.021" (0.53 mm) ~1.8 l/min Large areas, bucket operation
GX19 / GX FF Hopper model 0.019" (0.48 mm) ~1.4 l/min Contract work, smaller quantities

*Both models reach a maximum pressure of 207 bar (3000 psi).

⏱️ Fast Coating Progress

Thanks to high pressure and larger tips, even thick materials such as facade paints or primers are applied quickly and evenly.

🔌 Cordless Freedom

Powered by DeWalt FLEXVOLT 54V/60V batteries, you work completely independently of power outlets—ideal for construction sites and outdoor applications.

🎯 Fine Finish Possible

With special fine-finish tips (RAC X FF LP) and low pressure, you achieve a highly atomized spray pattern with minimal overspray for demanding work.

🛡️ Safety Tip No. 1

Always relieve pressure! The system remains under pressure even after shutting down. Before any maintenance, cleaning, or tip changes, you must perform the pressure relief procedure (page 14): Engage the trigger lock, switch off the unit, turn pressure to minimum, discharge the gun into a bucket. This prevents dangerous injection injuries.

Correct Settings: Choosing Pressure & Tip

For an optimal spray pattern, correct pressure and tip size are essential. Always start with the lowest pressure and increase only as needed.

Material (Examples) Recommended Pressure Level* Tip Size (Guide)
Thin stains Low (Low Spray) 0.011" – 0.015"
Interior & exterior paints, primers High (High Spray) 0.015" – 0.021" (GX21)
Lacquers, polyurethane, fine-finish Low (Low Spray) with fine-finish tip 0.008" – 0.016"

* Guideline. Always follow material manufacturer instructions.

The Professional Workflow in 6 Steps

  1. Preparation & Grounding: Strain material. For solvent-based (oil-based/flammable) materials always attach grounding cable to a true ground (e.g., water pipe) (page 10).
  2. Flush the test fluid: Flush out the factory test liquid with water or appropriate thinner (page 15–17).
  3. Prime the pump: Fill suction tube (GX21) or hopper (GX19) with material, switch unit on until colorless fluid comes from the drain hose (page 18).
  4. Fill gun & hose: Hold gun into a waste bucket, trigger until only pure material flows (page 19).
  5. Spraying: Install tip correctly. Hold gun vertically, 30 cm from surface. Pull trigger only while moving and release before finishing the stroke (page 23).
  6. Relieve pressure & clean: After finishing work, immediately relieve pressure (step 1 of cleaning). Clean system thoroughly with water (water-based materials) or thinner (solvent-based) (page 25–31).

Quick Help: Common Problems & Solutions

Motor does not start

  • Check battery charge and recharge if needed.
  • Easy Access Door must be fully closed and latched.
  • Pressure control knob must be turned away from “0”.

Pump does not prime / loses suction

  • Prime/Spray valve must be on PRIME until material flows.
  • Inlet valve ball stuck: press “PushPrime” button twice.
  • Strain material, clean suction tube/hopper filter, immerse suction tube deep enough.

Poor spray pattern (tails, uneven)

  • Tip clogged: rotate reversible tip to “Unclog” and spray briefly into waste area.
  • Pressure too low: increase pressure.
  • Tip worn (after approx. 15–60 gallons): replace tip.

Paint runs / does not cover

  • Too thick: move gun faster, choose smaller tip.
  • Too thin: move gun slower, choose larger tip.
  • Check distance to surface (approx. 30 cm).

Regular Maintenance for Long Service Life

  • Daily/Per Use: Clean inlet strainer, InstaClean filter (if installed), and gun filter.
  • Cleaning: Never clean the system under pressure with water or thinner. Always relieve pressure first.
  • Storage: After cleaning, flush with Pump Armor or similar preservation fluid to prevent corrosion. Store in a frost-free room.
  • Tips: Clean after every use. Wear occurs after approx. 60–230 liters depending on material.
  • Pump seals: If leakage occurs at pump side, replace seal kit (ProXChange module).

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions About Graco Airless

Which batteries are compatible?

Only DeWalt FLEXVOLT 54V Max or 60V Max batteries (e.g., DCB546, DCB606, DCB609). 18V/20V batteries do not work.

Do I need grounding when using dispersion paint?

No. Grounding is only mandatory when working with flammable or oil-based materials (lacquers, solvent-based coatings, thinners) to prevent sparking.

Can I switch between material types?

Yes, but only with thorough intermediate cleaning. After solvent-based materials, flush with water until clear water flows. After water-based materials, flush with thinner until no more water appears.

What do the numbers on the tip mean (e.g., 413)?

The last three digits indicate size and fan width. For “413”: first digit (4) × 2 = ~8 inch fan width (20 cm). Last two digits (13) = 0.013 inch orifice size.

The device beeps/flashes and shuts down.

This may indicate overheating, empty battery, or a blocked motor. Allow device to cool, replace battery, or contact service. The number of blinking lights helps diagnose the issue (page 41).

Conclusion

The Graco GX21 and GX19 are powerful and versatile tools for professional users. The key to safe, efficient, and high-quality results lies in proper setup (especially grounding!), choosing the right tip and pressure level, and thorough cleaning after each use. If you follow the steps and safety instructions summarized in this guide, nothing stands in the way of a smooth workflow.
