Chloride ions on the steel surface increase the likelihood of corrosion of the steel, even if a protective coating is applied. Chloride ions trapped under a coating form a corrosion cell in the presence of steel and moisture. This corrosion process leads to premature failure of the protective coating and can cause blistering on the coating when immersed.
Chloride test strips indicate the concentration of chloride ions in the sample solution. If the sampling area and the volume of water are known, the concentration can be measured in parts per million or micrograms per millimetre.
