Testing elasticity and impact resistance evaluates the mechanical durability of coatings under deformation or impact stress. Methods used include Mandrel-Bending according to ISO 1519 or ASTM D522, Erichsen-Cupping according to ISO 1520, and Impact Testing according to ISO 6272 and ASTM D2794. Test sets include test panels, mandrels and punches, weights, conditioning, calibration and statistics and reporting functions.
Elasticity and impact resistance tests are used in coil and strip coating, the automotive/OEM sector, mechanical engineering, the construction and architecture industry, furniture and decorative surfaces, as well as in laboratories and quality assurance. They provide reliable verification of flexibility and adhesion of coating layers, reduce complaints and ensure approvals – from lab testing to series production.
Mandrel-Bending (ISO 1519 / ASTM D522): Determination of bending elasticity using defined mandrels or mandrel sets. The mandrel diameter and bending speed are specified; cracks, flaking or adhesion loss are documented.
Erichsen-Cupping (ISO 1520): Determination of formability and adhesion by pressing a punch into the coated test panel. Punch travel, feed rate and support conditions are defined; the indentation value and any defects are recorded.
Impact Testing (ISO 6272 / ASTM D2794): Assessment of impact resistance using a defined impact energy. Mass, drop height and support type are specified, and the coating behaviour under indentation or penetration is evaluated.
Documentation: All results are recorded using photos and labels/QR codes. Via PDF/CSV export, serial number and user management plus limit testing, the results can be directly integrated into quality assurance.
The portfolio includes mandrel bending testers (Mandrel), Erichsen-Cupping testers, impact testers with falling weight, test panels and supports, weights, mandrels and punches as well as climate chambers and monitoring systems. In addition, app and cloud solutions with interfaces for digital QA protocols are available. We define test scope, standard reference and inspection plan and integrate the instruments into QA workflows, report storage and audit processes. Result: practical elasticity and impact testing with traceable documentation and standard compliance.

Learn moreCommon methods include Mandrel-Bending according to ISO 1519 and ASTM D522 (bending test over cylindrical mandrels), Erichsen-Cupping according to ISO 1520 (indentation test), and Impact Testing according to ISO 6272 and ASTM D2794 (falling weight).
Selection depends on substrate and coating system, coating thickness/cure, required bending radius or impact energy, punch/travel path and test climate. For Mandrel tests, mandrel diameter and speed must be specified; for Cupping, punch travel and speed; for Impact Testing, mass/drop height and support. Test panels, conditioning and calibration must be defined.
Through standardized test panels, conditioned samples, constant load/speed, clean contact surfaces and clear evaluation (cracks, flaking, indentations). Documentation includes instrument/accessories, parameters (mandrel, punch, energy), results with rating scales and PDF/CSV reports with date/user/serial number and photos.
We configure mandrel bending testers, Erichsen-Cupping and impact testers including test panels, calibration, inspection plans and documentation – compliant with ISO 1519/1520/6272 and ASTM D522/D2794. Result: audit-proof evidence, stable approvals and minimal rework.
